PerHealth 2010 - The First IEEE PerCom Workshop on Pervasive Healthcare

in conjunction with the
Eighth IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and
Communications - PerCom 2010 (http//www.percom.org/)

Mannheim, Germany
March 29 or April 2, 2010
----------------------------------------------------------

**** Paper Submission Deadline --- October 18, 2009 ****

Sponsored by

IEEE, IEEE Computer Society

----------------------------------------------------------

Pervasive Healthcare constitutes one of the most promising and technically challenging application domains for pervasive computing. It involves many research areas, from wearable computing and ubiquitous connectivity to context-awareness, sensor data fusion, artificial intelligence, expert systems, medical analytics, databases and user-friendly interfaces.
While significant technological progress has been achieved in the past few years, further work is needed to develop complete systems that can really improve the patient quality of life and reduce medical errors and costs. First of all, an efficient, reliable, and complete pervasive healthcare system must satisfy both medical and patient requirements in terms of accuracy, reliability, unobtrusiveness and user acceptance. To do this, a multidisciplinary approach is necessary starting from the integration of new wearable technologies in a single Body Area Network to the design and development of system architectures and middleware solutions able to
support efficient and dependable services like continuous remote monitoring,
patient tracking, and ambient assistance. The IEEE PerHealth workshop will
provide a forum where researchers in the area of Pervasive Healthcare can discuss
current results in the field and possible hints for future work.
Original contributions are solicited related to all areas involved in the design of
pervasive healthcare systems.

TOPICS

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Wearable and Implantable sensors for healthcare
- Pervasive communications in healthcare
- Service and device discovery
- Data fusion and context elaboration
- Privacy and security issues in healthcare
- Middleware for pervasive healthcare
- Energy Efficiency in health monitoring
- Artificial intelligence and expert systems
- User interface, usability and acceptability of pervasive healthcare systems
- Home monitoring and ambient assisted applications for healthcare
- Healthcare applications for clinicians
- Business Models of Pervasive Health Delivery
- Standards and frameworks

trauma conference, london, 6-8 nov 2009

We warmly invite you and your colleagues to submit abstract for presentation at our annual Trauma Conference, which is taking place on 6th-8th November 2009.

Trauma Conference website:

http://www.union. ic.ac.uk/ medic/surgicalso ciety/trauma/ international_ students. html

Trauma Conference is a national conference for medical students on trauma medicine, comprise of a programme of lectures, practicals, poster competition and presentation from international students. The 2-day programme is based on the Advanced Trauma Life Support course by the American College of Surgeons. It's a very popular event, with last year's tickets selling out within 14 days and we received very good feedback. We have some of the best trauma consultants in London giving us lectures, many specialist trainees giving practical demonstrations over a weekend. It has become a tradition of Surgical Society to invite medical students from abroad to give presentations before the conference, and they in turn will be invited to stay for the entire conference (no fees) and we will offer them certificates etc. So far, students from Germany, France, Romania, Australia and Malaysia have presented and attended the conference. Students from Taiwan and the Netherlands have also taken part in other Surgical Society events.

The titles for this year's international student presentations are:

1. An interesting case study in Trauma Medicine
2. What is the most important contribution to Trauma and Emergency Medicine from your country

It is hope that these titles will be suitable for both clinical and preclinical students to take part.
I really hope that you and some of your colleagues may be interested enough to submit an abstract for presentation at the conference. The dates of the conference are 7th-8th November 2009, and oral presentations which are shortlisted will take place in the evening of 6th November 2009. Further, I would be more than happy to keep you informed of ICSM Surgical Society's events, we always welcome guests from overseas!

ESF-UB Conference on 'Rare Diseases II - Hearing/Sight Loss', DL 22.9

- Call for Applications/Papers -

Closing date: extended to 22 September 2009

Chairs: Christine Petit, Institut Pasteur, Paris, FR & José-Alain Sahel, Institut de la Vison, Paris, FR

Organising Committee: Olivier Lorentz, Institut de la Vision, Paris,FR & Michèle Roa, Institut Pasteur, Paris, FR

Auditory and visual impairments compose a very large spectrum of rare disorders occurring at any age. These two sensory deficiencies are combined in several syndromes, such as Usher syndrome, leading to a major disability. Despite significant advances, progress in the understanding of the pathogenesis of these disorders as well as in the development of therapeutic approaches and rehabilitation, call for the setting up of a brisk cross-talk between these two scientific biomedical fields. Indeed the relationship between the two sensory systems is multiple. Most of the disorders affect the sensory organs.
Their respective sensory cells, which are the major target cells of the defects, share several structures, for instance a cilium and ribbon synapses, and physiological properties. The therapeutic approaches, nowadays mainly based on pharmacological and gene therapy approaches for retinal defects and prostheses for hearing impairment, especially cochlear implants, provide a broad range of experience that can be fully exploited by the other sensory field. Finally,
rehabilitation in patients massively relies on the compensation of one sense by the other.

The meeting will bring together experts in sensory neuroscience, developmental biology, genetics, cell biology, modelling, translational research and therapy. It aims at promoting exchanges between the scientists of the two fields and beyond, at stimulating the emergence of new research projects at the interface between disciplines and at training young researchers in this interdisciplinary field.

The sessions will discuss in parallel and compare for vision and hearing:
· the process of the sensory information by the two sensory systems
· the evolution of the two sensory systems
· the development of the sensory organs and the associated developmental defects
· the mechanisms of sensory transduction and the associated disorders
· the role of the cilium and the ribbon synapses in photoreceptor cells and auditory hair cells, and the pathogenesis of the disorders affecting the two sensory systems
· the various therapeutic approaches and rehabilitation: the present
achievements, challenges and the fast evolving perspectives.

Three poster awards will be distributed to the best posters presented.
These prizes will fully cover the participants’ fees and travel costs.

A good number of grants are also available for young researchers to cover the conference fee and possibly part of the travel costs. Grant requests should be made by ticking appropriate field(s) in the paragraph "Grant application" of the application form.

A certain number of short oral presentations will also be selected from submitted abstracts. Abstracts should be submitted together with the application form.

Full conference programme and application form are accessible online from www.esf.org/conferences/09295.

In June we will publish European Words volume 2 and for this edition the European Words team is still looking for articles!

European Words is looking for new team members, who will review the articles we receive, write their own articles and help develop the whole concept of European Words to grow to an even bigger level! We are also looking for a webmaster to create the new European Words website, which will be available soon.
Do you want to become part of the European Words team? Please send us an email with a short introduction and motivation at europeanwords@gmail.com. The deadline to apply is 15 June 2009!
